Especially within Europe and Middle East but also worldwide, Hazera has a leading position in hybrid round red radish varieties for indoor and outdoor production. We have earned this position by making radish breeding one of our priorities since more than 45 years. Our breeders focus on needs expressed by growers, processors, distributors and supermarkets in strategic and key areas. Important characteristics are high yield, disease resistance, suitability for mechanical harvesting, strong leaf attachment, bright color, superb internal quality, and the correct size and shape of the radish. Bulb uniformity and production reliability are among the most important demands from radish growers. For distributors and consumers a good shelf life, quality, taste, and a fresh appearance are very important.

Completely Radish!
Evolving demands from markets and customers continuously inspire Hazera to develop new, ever improved radish varieties. Hazera’s breeders have even adapted this crop successfully to be suitable for year-round production both indoor and outdoor. Our renowned range has now been extended with newcomers featuring strongly improved characteristics, with which we are rapidly expanding into new markets and segments. Very fine examples for indoor production are Autella F1 and Florella F1; both are uniform, productive and solid, bright red varieties.

Precious pearls of freshness
Radish, with the Latin name Raphanus sativus, belongs to the Cruciferae or mustard family. There are many types, colours and shapes. In the past decades radish has gained popularity and is now grown and consumed all over the world, from the Americas to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Radish is commonly sold loose or in bunches, is often pre-packed and used more and more in pre-cut salads. It is a healthy product to consume, with high levels of important vitamins and minerals like calcium, iron, potassium and zinc. Radish contains high levels of anti-oxidants as well.

With love for Radish
Interview with Hazera’s Global Product Manager Root & Bulb: Wim van der Heijden:
“What I like about Radish? It’s such a fantastic fast growing crop. Really amazing, from direct drilling into harvest period in the summer, it is grows just 20 days indoor and 25 days outdoor! Our sales guys like this crop because they can sell directly to the end user. They can have direct contact with the grower or driller and after a short period we can start selling. For most other crops you have to wait at least half a year or longer, before you can sell it. So for me it is quite a sexy crop.”

“My love for Radish is grown over the years. Since 15 years I am the Global Product manager Radish. In the past I work as a radish breeder (7 years) and radish specialist (10 years). Radish has always been an important crop for our company. Therefore we defined it as a key crop.  We invest strongly in radish breeding, marketing, production, promotion and sales. The focus is on indoor but also outdoor, low and high density for bunching and prepack/ slicing.”

“Our radish gives the growers added value due to special genes in our varieties. Like Autella, this variety is the first hybrid with ‘white rust’ resistance. We are the first company who introduced a white hybrid. That makes me proud! And I am very happy with our team of breeders-seed production-marketing-commercials. This team works already many years together and the results are up every year!”
